Bowmans announces partner promotions for 2023

Leading African law firm, Bowmans, has announced the promotion of six senior associates to partner with effect from 1 March 2023.

The promotions span several of the firm’s key practice areas, including Competition, Corporate, Finance, Private Equity, M&A and Projects, Energy and Infrastructure.

Chairman and senior partner Ezra Davids says, ‘Congratulations to these exceptional lawyers on their well‐deserved promotions. Bowmans new partners include:

Amanda Mfuphi – Competition Practice, Johannesburg: Mfuphi has extensive experience in investigating and analysing the competitive and public interest impacts of mergers, monitoring compliance with merger conditions, and detecting the prior implementation of mergers. This is because he assessed mergers across a broad range of sectors during his time working as a senior analyst with the South African Competition Commission’s Mergers and Acquisitions Division. He has LLB and LLM degrees from the University of KwaZulu-Natal as well as a second LLM from the University of Notre Dame in the USA and a Postgraduate Certificate in Banking and Financial Markets from the University of the Witwatersrand.

Edwin Baru – Projects, Energy and Infrastructure Practice, Nairobi: Baru specialises in energy, project development and infrastructure law and has a sound knowledge of general corporate and commercial law. He has been involved in a wide range of projects (covering power, ports, roads, telecommunications, hospitals, upstream petroleum and waste management) and involving public procurements and public-private partnerships in Kenya and in the wider East Africa region. Baru is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya and is a practising company secretary. He has an LLB from University of Nairobi and a postgraduate diploma from the Kenya School of Law.

Javed Niamut – Corporate Practice, Moka (Mauritius): Niamut specialises in corporate law with a focus on M&A transactions, joint ventures, business structuring and reorganisations. His experience extends to advising on company law, tax law, employment law and corporate reporting and governance matters. Niamut read law at Oxford Brookes University and completed the Bar Vocational Course at the University of the West of England. He was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2011 at the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple and has been a member of the Bar Association in Mauritius since 2013.

Kate Peter – Private Equity Practice, Johannesburg: Peter specialises in private equity transactions and has extensive experience in acquisitions within South Africa and further afield in Africa. She has advised on both upstream (including fund formation, fund-of-funds work and co-investment transactions) and downstream (including acquisitions and disposals of investments) private equity work. Peter has also gained cross-border and international experience working as a secondee to Bowmans Kenyan office and having spent a year on secondment to the Corporate Transactions & Advisory team at Clifford Chance in London. She has BSocSc and LLB Laws degrees from the University of Cape Town.

Mohammed Saib – Finance Practice, Johannesburg: Saib has extensive experience in a range of debt capital market transactions having acted for a range of clients, including national and international investment banks, corporates and SOEs, on these matters. Saib also has international experience having advised leading financial institutions on structured products programmes. He has acted as issuer counsel on programme updates/establishments and notes issuances with respect to the UK and European Prospectus Regulation regime and listing requirements in England, Ireland, Luxembourg and the rest of Europe. He has an LLB (summa cum laude) from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Naqeeba Hassan – M&A Practice, Cape Town: Hassan specialises in mergers and acquisitions (M&A). She has advised a variety of clients (including listed entities and unlisted corporations, private equity funds, asset managers, property developers and financial institutions in the public and private sectors) on M&A and black economic empowerment transactions, corporate re-organisations and restructures. Her experience extends to leading legal due diligence investigations in a wide range of industries, regulatory and corporate governance compliance issues and general corporate and commercial law. Hassan has BA (International Relations and Law) and LLB (cum laude) degrees from the University of the Witwatersrand.
